I listened to the song through, and it isn't by any means top-of-the-charts material. But I was intrigued by its reminiscence of Michael Jackson's Billy Jean (which is a much better song...but then, how could Justin ever compete with the King of Pop?) Compare and contrast the lyrics:
Justin Bieber:
- "Maria, why you wanna do me like that? That ain't my baby, that ain't my girl."
- "Now she's in the magazines, on TV, making a scene...and she's all over the news, saying everything but the truth."
Michael Jackson:
- "Billy Jean is not my lover. She's just a girl who says that I am the one. But the kid is not my son."
- "She told me her name was Billy Jean as she caused a scene, and every head turned with eyes that dreamed of being the one."
And they both fade out at the end...
"Billy Jean is not my lover...Billy Jean is not my lover..."
"She ain't my baby, she ain't my girl...she ain't my baby, she ain't my girl..."
Maybe Justin should be looking out for himself, with videos like this one going viral:
And my whole point to this post is...people are crazy. And this kind of stuff becomes wildly entertaining when it's put to a catchy beat.
How Funny! I've never heard that song by Justin Bieber but ya, I can totally see the similarities with Billy Jean. Way to pick that out!
ReplyDeleteI'm not a fan of Justin and it's not just because he's a teenage boy. His music is just...like all pop music these days. Heavy beat and predictable music pattern. Comparing those two songs was an eye-opener. Lyrics for some music now-a-days are boring, plain, and less creative and poetic. Plus, if he got the idea from the king of pop then he's just ripping off his genius. It's just same old, same old: been there, done that. But I have to admit, sometimes I find myself listening to it anyway. Whether you want to like it or not, it's catchy. Meh.
ReplyDeleteI'm guilty of listening to Justin Bieber too...but his new CD is good! It's funny that you compared this song to Michael Jackson because I did that with one of his songs too. I made my roommates watch the As Long as You Love Me music video a couple nights ago and we all thought it seemed like Justin was trying to have a "Thriller" kind of feel with the garage dancing scenes. Maybe Justin secretly wishes he could be the new king of pop?
ReplyDeleteApparently I learned that a lady accused Justin Bieber of being the father of her child and there was this huge deal about it. So he wrote that song to get back at her basically because obviously it turned out to not be true. Oh what people will do for attention and media coverage.
